GEAR4, a U.K.-based manufacturer of iPod accessories and other wireless gadgets, announced today a new set of Bluetooth headphones, designed for use with mobile phones, laptops, and MP3 players.
The BluePhones were designed to overcome less-than-desirable features found in some similar products, including bulkiness, flimsiness, poor battery life, and high price tag. The company claims that BluPhones are “the smallest, lightest and most practical Bluetooth headphones EVER designed.”
That claim will ultimately be determined in the marketplace, but for now here are a few BluPhone features:
+ Weight = 26 grams (just shy of 1 oz.)
+ Stereo audio for A2DP Bluetooth devices, mono for others
+ Hands-free operation for mobile phones
+ 5 hour music playing/talk time
+ 60 hours standby time
+ 10 meter (roughly 33 feet) range
GEAR4 designed BluPhones with two primary functions in mind: taking calls on a mobile phone, listening to music. When in use, the headphones will pause music playback if a call comes in. On-board controls let the user quickly and easily answer the call and then switch back to music when the conversation is over. On-ear controls built into BluPhones let users control volume and skip tracks.
BluPhones’ features and price-point (GBP 49.99, $97) put this product in direct competition with the likes of Sharper Image’s AN106 ($99.95), IOGEAR’s GBMH201 ($89.95), and Logitech’s FreePulse ($100ish) products.
GEAR4’s latest product is available on the company’s website, www.gear4.com.
