Federal LNP Mandate To Cost Millions
A study released by Evolving Systems, Inc., shows that Local Number Portability (LNP), a
federal mandate of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, could cost competitive local
exchange carriers (CLECs) and wireless carriers millions in potentially unrecoverable
costs. LNP allows consumers to keep their existing phone numbers when they switch between
local telephone service providers. Once the mandate becomes effective on October 1, 1997,
and incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) begin supporting LNP, CLECs and wireless
carriers that cannot obtain new call routing data will be faced with ILEC transactions
fees to handle LNPrelated calls. The study also reveals that ILECs are expected to charge
an average transaction rate of three cents per call to perform the required database
check. For more information, contact Michele Dionne at 303-802-2426.
AimQuest To Resell Siemens TIS
AimQuest Corporation plans to resell Internet Telephony servers from Siemens Business
Communication Systems to ISPs. As part of the partnership, Siemens will provide AimQuest

Siemens is also to provide engineering services. AimQuest plans on giving Siemens its
authentication, directory services, billing, and related software and service products for
sale to Siemens business customers who wish to add Internet roaming to their
Intranet gateways. Siemens TIS allows voice and real-time fax calls initiated from a
communications server to be routed over an IP network. By effectively providing alternate
trunks over the corporate IP infrastructure or the Internet, the TIS reduces the number of
leased telephone lines required, thus lowering users longdistance costs. For more
information, contact Jon Porter (AimQuest) at 408-955-1920 x1162 or Karron Esmonde
