ABI Research Unveils 2012 Indoor Small Cell Vendor Matrix

Marketing research firm ABI Research revealed its latest 2012 Indoor Small Cell Vendor Matrix. In its most recent evaluation of worldwide small cell vendors, ABI Research has placed Ubiquisys (News - Alert), a provider of intelligent 3G femtocells, at the top. Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei claimed the second and third position. IP access gained two positions from last year due to innovations like OysterCatcher and its momentum outside of its main AT&T (News - Alert) small cell deployment in partnership with Cisco. Airvana took over other vendors in terms of shipments and revenues from small cells based on their Sprint (News - Alert) 3G AIRAVE contract.
“Ubiquisys takes the top spot on the back of its continued commitment to innovation with technologies like SideStep, CloudBase, and EdgeCloud, while keeping their commercial contracts ticking through their NEC and NSN partnerships,” Aditya Kaul, practice director, mobile networks at ABI Research said in a press release.
“Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei have also seen commercial success over the past year in terms of contract wins, but Ubiquisys’ dedicated focus on the small cell area allows them to stay a couple of steps ahead of their larger rivals when it comes to introducing innovative techniques that should shape the future of the small cell market,” Kaul added.
ABI Research evaluates vendors on the basis of innovation and implementation by selecting multiple criteria related to product/company characteristics that serve as proxies for the vendors' performance in these two areas. The Indoor Small Cell Vendor Matrix is a component of the Femtocell (News - Alert) and Small Cell research service which compares small cell access point vendors and ranks them based on various criteria linked to innovation and implementation. This matrix primarily covers the competitiveness of vendors that provide access points for residential and enterprise small cells.
TMC reported earlier on femtocells, where Mosaic Telecom, a regional US operator serving rural Wisconsin, is noted to be providing its customers with femtocells based on the 3GPP Release 9 open standard. Mosaic Telecom said that its Mosaic Home Cell is provided by Ubiquisys, the developer of 3G and LTE small cells, as part of a Nokia Siemens (News - Alert) Networks femtocell solution.
