Facebook Users Given Seven Days to Clean Up Profiles as Timeline Becomes Mandatory

By James W. Flewellyn, Contributing Writer

Watch out Facebookers: the company announced today that its largest interface update since it rolled out the “Wall” is no longer optional. The company has stated that over the course of the next few weeks, all Facebook users will be gradually updated to its new profile interface style. Here is the issue: after you are updated to Timeline (News - Alert), you will have seven short days to view and edit what appears on your profile.

For those not in the know, Facebook Timeline facilitates easy browsing through your Facebook (News - Alert) posts. This seems, at first, to appear trivial or minute; however, Timeline essentially makes it easier for people viewing your profile to flip through and view everything you have ever posted on Facebook, ever.

This is in direct opposition to the current “Wall” layout, in which what you post is lost as new posts are created. Where these older posts were previously only available through lots and lots of scrolling, Timeline presents navigational elements that make your life, as outlined by your internet activities, available for the world to see.

Timeline also allows users to fill in information from before they had Facebook accounts using the new status update box, which features options to add specific years and “life events”. The “events” available include marriages, births, deaths, new jobs, trips, vacations, and a long list of similar things that one would want to present as a depiction of one’s life.

This added ability to access the entirety of a given user’s Facebook history presents the need for most users to “clean up” those potentially embarrassing or socially incriminating prior posts.

In a post on the Facebook Blog writer Paul McDonald offers fairly easy and clear instructions for doing this Timeline cleanup, and Facebook users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the workings and policies of their new interface.

The company is also releasing a new tool today that goes along with Timeline called Activity Log, a tool which allows users to review all of their previous posts and activity.

At its initial roll out, Timeline was an optional feature that Facebook did not try to push too hard on users. The idea was to allow users time update and adapt their previous posts to the new feature.

Facebook’s “seven days to edit” idea, with regards to its full scale Timeline update, is an extension of this time to adapt, which could prove difficult for infrequent Facebook users who do not notice the update.
