Facebook Timeline Now Available to Everyone

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Facebook (News - Alert) is sporting a new look once again, only this time it gives users a month-by-month view, similar to a magazine.

Facebook Timeline, a deeper profile view is described as letting users “tell the whole story of your life on a single page,” at least that’s how Mark Zuckerberg (News - Alert) explains it.

As of right now, the timeline profile view is opt-in, however, like all Facebook makeovers, it will eventually be rolled out to everyone, like it or not.

“Timeline (News - Alert) gives you an easy way to rediscover the things you shared and collect your most important moments,” writes Facebook spokesperson Paul MacDonald on the Facebook Blog. “It also lets you share new experiences, like the music you listen to or the miles you run.”

The overall look and feel turns a user’s profile into something that looks like a Web page, filled with a variety of information that’s updated at different times.

The most visually prominent new feature is Cover, a large, illustrated banner at the top of Timeline. The old Update Status window gets pride of place in the top-right corner. Facebook apps are clustered at the bottom of the user’s Timeline page.

“Timeline is here, and we're giving you 7 days to review everything before it goes live and you hate it,” said Zuckerberg on Thursday morning.

With every new Facebook rollout, there’s usually a bevy of complaints. The last makeover in September of this year sparked so much criticism that even news outlets couldn’t ignore the chatter.

The first change in September that had crowds in an uproar was the profile design that included a new version of the news feed and a new Twitter (News - Alert)-like ticker.

The news feed aggregates your “friend's” activities like it did in the past, only now it focuses primarily on events and photo sharing. Also, it aggregates friend activity that it thinks you would be interested in viewing, followed by a section detailing recent friend activity.

Uses felt the change was chaotic and rather busy and they were, like previous Facebook updates, missing the “old” Facebook.

Once Timeline is rolled out to all Facebook users, one wonders what sort of backlash the social networking site will receive this time?
