Facebook (News - Alert) has been debuting a ton of new features for its users over the last few months, but the introduction of the ability to listen to music with friends might be the best one yet. Facebook has actually gone out of its way to give the site a new look and feel since the beginning of 2011 and the latest twist up until now has been the premiere of the Timeline display for all of its users. 

The ability to listen to music with friends on Facebook is actually a function that is a long time coming. Ever since the online music service Spotify came to the United States, there has been talk of this kind of integration between the British firm and the world’s most popular social networking site. 

Facebook has now had the ability to see what your friends are listening to, and go listen to that song as well for a couple of months. According to a post on the Facebook blog, this is actually a little different.

Using the listen with friends function, if you see that a friend of yours is listening to your favorite song, you can essentially jack in at the same point in the song as they are. This way, you are doing more than listening to the same music as your friend, but you are actually listening to the same song. 

When your friend is listening to a song, that status will pop up on the right hand side in their news ticker. Then, when you hover over their name you will see a “listen with” link. Click this and you will enter the song at the same point in time as your friend. 

The one catch is that in order to use this service you will have to be using the same music service as your friend. Spotify (News - Alert) and Rdio are the only two services that currently offer this particular service on Facebook for the moment.

While listening to the same song, you can also interact using the Facebook chat feature. Facebook says that as many as 50 different friends can all listen in on the same song and that one person can basically DJ for an online dance party.
