Hacker Group Attacks Tumblr with Racist Spam

By Tracey E. Schelmetic, TMCnet Contributor

Tumblr, the popular micro-blogging platform and social networking website, is under attack this morning. The perpetrators are a notoriously unpleasant hacker group.

The website BuzzFeed is reporting that a hacker group, called the GNAA, created a worm that unleashed a flood of racist spam onto users' Tumblr dashboards. There are reports that the bug has infected almost 9,000 Tumblr user accounts

The primary target seems to be a “Brony” website (those are male fans of “My Little Pony.”) Yes, really.

Tumblr send a Tweet this morning from its main Twitter (News - Alert) account that it is aware of the issue and is currently investigating it, calling it a “viral post circulating on Tumblr.” When asked for comment, a Tumblr representative responded with the following, which was also posted on Twitter:

“There is a viral post circulating on Tumblr which begins ‘Dearest Tumblr users’. If you have viewed this post, please log out of all browsers that may be using Tumblr immediately. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible. Thank you.”

So how do you avoid it? BuzzFeed recommends perhaps avoiding Tumblr right now until the problem is fixed. The more people get infected, the faster they spread. Secondly, if you do go to Tumblr, visit your Dashboard only, and avoid following any direct links to Tumblr posts, or visiting any Tumblrs directly, as this seems to be how this mess spreads.
