Polaris Wireless Demonstrates Mandate Qualifications in Field Trials

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Location information is often a focus of conversation within the mobile marketing arena as an increasing number of companies are considering the benefits of location-based advertising. In order to explore such opportunities further, however, companies have to be sure the technologies they use are in compliance with industry or government regulations. The same is true if that technology is to be used for law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Polaris Wireless, a provider of high-accuracy, software-based wireless location solutions, recently completed successful field trials with a Tier 1 Indian wireless operator. Polaris Wireless was tasked with the process of proving its interoperability with provider’s 3G network.

This process was part of the company’s efforts to prove compliance with India’s Department of Telecommunications’(DoT) May 2011 mandate governing location-based services. The company successfully exceeded the DoT mandate in rural and suburban environment trials, as well as in the remote areas using the 2G network.

The WLSTM solution developed by Polaris is based on the 3GPP standardized RF Pattern Matching strategy. The mandate established by the DoT specified accuracy levels or 30 to 95 percent within 24 months of adoption for a range of 50 to 300 meters within urban areas. In 3G field trials in Kolkata, accuracy levels reached 62 to 99 percent

."We are very pleased with the performance of Polaris WLSTM in a 3G network environment," said Srinivas Varadarajan, Polaris Wireless Vice President of Sales & Business Development, Asia. "Polaris Wireless offers the most accurate location solution for public safety and commercial location applications. We look forward to working with Indian wireless network operators to deploy our best-in-class location solution."

Polaris Wireless is able to tout that it is the first provider of location solutions to exceed the DoT mandate for all radio access technologies across all required environments. The company has successfully demonstrated the attainability of the mandate benchmarks and has set the standard in that market.

Bhavin Shah, vice president of Marketing & Business Development for Polaris Wireless shared, “What we’ve been doing now is using the same technology which we patented and invented, called wireless location signatures, in a variety of security-based applications. So, our target audience now not only is wireless telecom operators, but also law enforcement and intelligence agencies.”Shah recently joined Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) in the TMC newsroom in San Jose, Calif.
