Globalive Wireless Picks DragonWave's Ethernet Backhaul Solutions for 3G Network Across Canada

DragonWave, a global supplier of high-capacity and wireless native Ethernet backhaul solutions for mobile and access networks, is offering its services to Globalive Wireless Management Corp.

Globalive Wireless is Canada's newest provider of wireless communications services. The company selected DragonWave (News - Alert) to provide high-capacity, cost effective next generation wireless backhaul for its high-speed packet access network.

Today’s high-bandwidth applications demand high-capacity networks. DragonWave's made-in-Canada Horizon Compact product allows companies to meet the growing demand for more bandwidth without the expense of building or expanding a fiber backbone, officials said.

According to Ken Campbell, CEO of Globalive Wireless Management Corp., this move will provide them the future-ready technology that enables the delivery of high-capacity, cost-effective IP-based services and enable them to provide Canadian consumers with unmatched value.

Campbell further said that this new development would also help create Canadian jobs in an innovative sector at a time when the country needs them the most.

Globalive Wireless selected DragonWave for its innovative, Ethernet-based alternative to the more expensive leased-line and fiber optic infrastructure favored by legacy carriers.

DragonWave designs, develops, and markets carrier-grade microwave radio frequency networking equipment that wirelessly transmit broadband voice, video and other data.

DragonWave's wireless Ethernet products, which are based on a native Ethernet platform, function as a wireless extension to an existing fiber-optic core telecommunications network. Their principal application is the backhaul function in a wireless communications network.

DragonWave Horizon and AirPair products operate in both licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies between 6 and 38 GHz. They deliver pure "packet" microwave performance with software scalable, ultra-low latency transport of up to 1.6 Gbps per link.

DragonWave products are easy to deploy and manage. They deliver carrier-grade interference-free performance in next-generation IP networks.

For DragonWave, this contract represents the largest Canadian network to date, said DragonWave president and CEO Peter Allen (News - Alert), in a statement. This win is particularly pleasing for the company because these solutions, which have been developed in their Ottawa based R&D facilities, are going to be used in the home market.

Recently TMCnet reported that DragonWave is offering Horizon Compact to Lebanese telecommunications provider Cedarcom (News - Alert) to deliver high capacity Ethernet backhaul throughout its Mobi and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) networks.
