Acer Notebooks to Utilize Broadcom Crystal HD Solution

Acer has announced it selected Broadcom’s (News - Alert) Crystal HD solution to enable high quality high definition media playback on its notebook computers.

The Acer (News - Alert) One, a thin and lightweight notebook that weighs only 2.19 pounds, is smaller than usual laptops and more affordable - making it more convenient for users who want a more compact and cheaper model.

Now, with the help of Crystal HD, the notebooks can easily playback 1080p videos with low power consumption and CPU utilization.

Broadcom's Crystal HD Enhanced Media Accelerator (based on the Broadcom BCM70010/BCM70012 HD video decoder chipset) helps satisfy the consumer demand for HD content playback on low cost notebooks. The BCM70010/BCM70012 media PC chipset supports the next generation H.264 and VC-1 video compression algorithms to enable netbooks to playback online high definition streaming and downloaded media content. It is a single stream HD AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 video decoder solution that can do HD real time decoding.

Company officials claim that their Crystal HD solution can deliver market leading performance and quality and excel when system cost, power consumption, CPU utilization and fan noise are key factors.

Acer said it chose the solution from Broadcom in an aim to enhance user’s wireless Internet and entertainment experience’s while on the road.

This move, Dan Eiref, Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom's Consumer Electronics Group said will help to popularize a rich multimedia experience in the netbook market segment.

Broadcom’s third generation Blu-ray chipset solution was also recently selected by Samsung (News - Alert) Electronics for its 2009 lineup of Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems.

In addition, Broadcom has also announced it designed a new system on a chip (SoC) solution specifically for Personal Navigation Device (PND) manufacturers.
