University of Texas Picks D-Link's Security and Surveillance System with PoE Technology

D-Link recently announced that it has deployed a surveillance solution at the University of Texas, in order to facilitate remote monitoring as well as higher level of security for health and science data system equipments inside the institutes’ campus.

Housing a student population of approximately 3,865 along with 1,389 faculty and 3,648 staff, the University of Texas is located in the Texas medical center and includes the dental branch, the graduate school of biomedical sciences, the medical school and the school of public health In addition, the school of nursing, the school of health information sciences, the UT Harris County psychiatric center, and the Brown foundation institute of molecular medicine for the prevention of human diseases are all located here.

The institute had constructed a new 7,500-square-foot data center in Houston. A part of the building design included the need for a security and surveillance solution that would enable the institute to record activities within the data center as well as review incidents; monitor who is performing what tasks throughout the day; and keep track of the general coming and going of employees. This, the institute said, would help them to protect and monitor the facility and the valuable equipment housed there.

"We wanted to see who's coming and going in this high-value facility," said Kevin Granhold, director of data center operations and support services at UT's Health Science Center. "We also needed to monitor entrances to remotely let people in if necessary."

Not wanting to add power receptacles to accommodate wireless cameras, the University administrators picked wired Ethernet cameras with Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology from D-Link (News - Alert) – as a surveillance solution for the organization. In addition, network cameras are less expensive than analog, from both equipment and wiring perspectives, said the institute.

University officials said that 30 D-Link network cameras with PoE were purchased, in which 40 percent featured digital zoom (DCS-5300) and 60 percent featured optical zoom (DCS-6620) are included. The network of IP surveillance is linked together with a 24-port PoE switch, the D-Link DES-3828P and D-Link DWL-P50 PoE adapters. This separate network links to the production network via one uplink.
