Sony to Upgrade VAIO Notebooks

Fans of the notebooks will remember Sony's Pocket-Size VAIO P Series Lifestyle PCs at the Consumer Electronics Show from the beginning of the year.

Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC is a super small portable PCs and the company claimed the device is small enough to easily slip into a jacket pocket or purse. Weighing 1.4 lbs, mini-notebook is roughly the size of a business envelope and as thin as a typical cell phone.

Now, Sony has announced it will embed Qualcomm’s Gobi mobile Internet technology into their VAIO notebook PC lines.

Qualcomm (News - Alert) said it can offer Sony VAIO users very high speed Internet usage via 3G cellular connectivity taking their reach beyond Wi-Fi as well as make Sony the first notebook manufacturer to have Gobi technology as a standard feature in several of its PC models.

According to Qualcomm, Gobi is the first embedded mobile wireless solution designed to put an end to connectivity limitations.

With Gobi, the notebook computer becomes the unifying agent between the different high speed wireless networking technologies deployed around the world and that means freedom from having to locate hotspots, more choice in carrier networks, and continuous connectivity.

Company officials also said that this combination of carrier network technologies will provide comprehensive support for all 3GPP and 3GP2 technologies.

VAIO notebooks will initially feature Gobi technology in three of the ultra-portable models, including the VAIO Z, TT and new P series. VAIO models utilizing Gobi technology may vary by region.

With the technology, users can send and receive email, upload or download photos, receive instant updates to social media sites, and access a wide range of software applications over the Internet on their notebooks - all through 3G cellular networks. A service activation charge and other fees apply.

"By embedding Qualcomm technology into our notebooks we are offering our customers an attractive combination of performance and ease of use," said Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing at Sony Electronics. "We expect Gobi 3G connectivity to be a sought-after feature and a significant enhancement."
