MontaVista To Support Developers on Google Android Platform

MontaVista Software has announced that the company will support developers running MontaVista Linux for use with the Google (News - Alert) Android platform. The company demonstrated the Android mobile platform running on a TI OMAP3 processor, one of the processors supported by MontaVista Linux, at Embedded Technology 2008 in Yokohama, Japan.
MontaVista (News - Alert) claims that most of the mobile devices based on Linux use MontaVista Linux as the platform. The company plans to empower various Linux platforms to power Android (News - Alert) devices across a variety of new hardware platforms.
“Over 50 million handsets have been powered by MontaVista Linux, making it the leading Linux OS in the mobile device market,” said Joerg Bertholdt, vice president of marketing of MontaVista. “We are bringing MontaVista Linux’s advanced features and hardware support, along with our professional Linux support, to developers of Android devices to help device manufacturers embrace the Android platform and bring innovative handsets to market quickly.”
In addition to powering many of today’s Linux handsets, MontaVista Linux:
· Has demonstrated support of and integration with all major Linux mobile software stacks
· Is the only mobile Linux solution certified as being ready for IPv6
· Provides support for new mobile device processors from Freescale Semiconductor, Intel (News - Alert), Texas Instruments and others
“MontaVista Linux is a mature, mobile device platform. We expect MontaVista Linux, combined with our world-class support, to become the Linux platform to power Android devices across a variety of new hardware platforms,” added Bertholdt.
