MRV Launches New Packet Optical Networking Solution
By Vinti Vaid, TMCnet Contributing Editor
MRV Communications (News - Alert), a global provider of communications equipment and services and optical components to carriers, governments, and enterprises, announced the launch of its optical packet blade, the LambdaDriver OPN1600.
According to Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications, "Based on 20 years of innovation in packets and optical technology, MRV's LambdaDriver product is the first solution to support end-to-end, optical packet networking with cost effectiveness at the edge and capacity and bandwidth for the core."
"The new blade allows our customers to combine Metro Ethernet packet transport with tunable wavelength switching to meet their demands for higher bandwidth optical services with advanced SLA and traffic management," Lotan said in a statement.
LambdaDriver is a packet optical transport network (POTN) solution that supports both multi-degree ROADM (News - Alert) and optical-electronic-optical (OEO) cross connect functionality in the same module.
The solution supports services ranging from T1/E1 to 40 Gbps WDM in the same wavelength-switching chassis. It supports both TDM transport and Metro Ethernet connection-oriented packet traffic and enables migration from SONET/SDH to Metro Ethernet optical transport networks.
The OPN1600-8C2 module provides multi-layer SLA management with end-to-end visibility for transport and packet services under a unified control plane. This allows enhanced flexibility in network design and improved service level agreements (SLAs) for providers.
The module has eight Gigabit Metro Ethernet (GbME) transport ports for network access connections that can set any-to-any mapping policy to two 10GE LAN/WAN Metro MPLS transport uplinks.
Its dual 10GE uplink interfaces support 10GE WAN mode for bi-directional 10GE transmission over SONET/SDH. This solution provides end-to-end data transmission over local-, regional- and metropolitan-area fiber-optic networks with a direct connection to SONET/SDH using corresponding rate and framing.
The module uses integration of Ethernet over MPLS edge and GMPLS optical transport control plane with carrier Ethernet to provide enhanced service OAM and end-to-end packet optical service management capabilities.
The LambdaDriver OPN1600 is on display in MRV's booth (SU6507) at NXTcomm08 this week (June 16-19).
