Actelis Intros New Product Line for Mobile Backhaul

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

At the NXTcomm08 show this week, Actelis (News - Alert) is releasing its new ML650 for mobile backhaul, featuring enhancements to the company’s ML600 Ethernet access device product line.

Actelis claims ML650 EAD is one the first products to earn a MEF 18 certification from the Metro Ethernet Forum (News - Alert). Without surrendering service quality this solution can provide reliable TDM and advanced high speed broadband services more than a converged packet network.

Actelis Networks is a provider of carrier Ethernet solutions. The company's products combine EFMplus copper transmission technology with a complete set of standards-based carrier Ethernet switching capabilities that extend the reach of Ethernet services more than the existing voice-grade copper network.

"A standards-based solution that delivers higher bandwidth to mobile base stations more than a converged packet network while providing TDM circuits and highly reliable network synchronization clearly paves the path to ubiquitous deployment of mobile broadband," said Eric Vallone, vice president of marketing at Actelis Networks.

Vallone continued: "Coupled with greater rate, reach and reliability, Actelis has introduced an innovative portfolio of mobile backhaul products that combines TDM and broadband services without sacrificing service quality. Actelis' products eliminate the daunting expense of trenching for fiber, while supporting the mobile operators' evolution from 2G through 3G, and all the way to 4G/LTE (News - Alert)."

Actelis Networks asserts that, by introducing the new ML650 EAD product family, it has overcome the belief that pseudowire techniques are the only palpable solution for converging mobile voice and data networks. The new product family delivers reliability, synchronization accuracy and cost-effective high-bandwidth availability factors for easy deployments.

A recent Infonetics Research (News - Alert) report predicted that the number of mobile subscribers will reach 4.4 billion worldwide by 2011. The use of Apple’s iPhone among customers has also forced service providers to look into options for increasing bandwidth.

Additionally, Michael Howard (News - Alert), principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research, believes that heavy competition is forcing operators to upgrade their network capacity to improve and add new subscriber services, which includes upgrades for IP/Ethernet, while still requiring the use of TDM circuits at the base station to support the evolution.

"All market indicators support the continued growth of the mobile backhaul market," said Howard, in a statement. "We expect to see the Ethernet mobile backhaul revolution really kicks off in 2009, with part of the ramp coming from Ethernet more than copper solutions. Mobile backhaul represents a major opportunity for Actelis, and their (ML650) EFM device with increased bandwidth, clock synchronization and reliability is a pragmatic product that mobile operators and backhaul transport providers will consider for the many cell sites that will be copper-connected for years."
