Interop Survey Takes Pulse of Personal PCs, Devices on Corporate Networks

Enterasys (News - Alert) Networks has announced the results of its "Consumerization of IT" Interop (News - Alert) survey, taking the pulse of Interop Las Vegas 2011 attendees with regard to personal PCs and devices connecting to the corporate network.

The survey found that concerns about personal devices connecting to the corporate network weigh heavily on a lot of minds out there – especially among those who’ve had nasty experiences with security breaches, as probably should be expected.

“IT is struggling to strike a balance between enabling productivity by allowing an ever-growing list of new devices, and maintaining appropriate levels of compliance and security,” said Ram Appalaraju, vice president of marketing at Enterasys Networks. “The younger generation in today’s workforce often uses personal devices and applications as important tools to further the organization’s goals.”

Oh, and here’s a shocker – “many admit to violating their own policies and suspect their own employees and executives of violating policies.” We know you’d never cut a corner or two that way, but, yes, hard as it is to believe, others do.

And according to the survey respondents, Bring Your Own Device programs are “a significant employee benefit,” even as important as benefits such as “teleworking, flexible spending accounts, and maternity, paternity and adoption leave.” Maybe not as important as free coffee in the office, but you know, important.

The survey found that “improved employee productivity” is the most influential factor in allowing employees to use their own devices, according to survey officials, who report that 62 percent indicate this is somewhat or very influential, followed by cost savings for 51 percent and employee demand and satisfaction for 35 percent of those surveyed.
