RVU Alliance to Display RUI Technology Solution at IBC2012

The RVU Alliance recently announced that it will conduct a number of demonstrations of the RVU Remote User Interface (RUI) solution at the IBC 2012 being held Sept. 7-11 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.  The RVU Alliance is an Oregon-based not-for-profit, mutual benefit corporation supporting development of RVU technology and full-featured “pixel accurate” Remote User Interface (RUI).

In a release, Henry Derovanessian, president of the RVU Alliance and senior vice president at DIRECTV, said that, “We are thrilled at the number of demonstrations of deployed solutions at IBC this year. We expect to see several million RVU client and server devices deployed next year from a number of OEMs. With the roadmap finalized for the next generation of the protocol, RVU clearly is the leading RUI solution supported by broadcast operators and OEMs alike.”

Broadcom, DIRECTV, Entropic Communications, Pace and Samsung (News - Alert) who make up the RVU Alliance will jointly demonstrate new products based on the RVU standard at the IBC 2012. The DIRECTV Home Media Center, which incorporates the RVU protocol, is among the shortlisted finalist for the IBC Content Delivery Innovation Awards to be presented on Sunday, Sept. 9.

The RVU Protocol Specification which is based on the RUI standard essentially establishes an interface between a single server in the home and multiple client devices at one time. It provides both premium TV content as well as a consistent User Interface for all connected clients which include devices such as Smart TVs, Blu Ray disc players and OTT platforms. These devices mitigate the need for maintaining separate set-top boxes.

RVU, which was included within the DLNA Interoperability Guidelines this year, is an open standard based on the DLNA standard. Clients are certified after clearing a number of test procedures, a full suite of development tools, as well as an independent certification process which is organized by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory.

Products based on the RVU technology and incorporating solutions from DIRECTV and SAMSUNG were deployed late last year. The coming months will see the inclusion of new servers and clients.
