Code Corporation Launches Bar Code Reader Management System at HIMSS

CortexRM, Code Corporation’s newest software product, integrates with third-party management applications so that IT managers do not need a separate tool dedicated to managing barcode readers.

With CortexRM, IT managers have instant visibility of a barcode reader no matter where the reader is located. The software is designed to save time, to save on costs, and to reduce on-site service calls that are associated with managing readers. “The ability for our clients to track, upgrade and secure their hardware investment is critical,” said Garrett Russell, Vice President of Global Marketing of Code Corporation. “CortexRM allows an IT administrator to track a single reader, or a fleet of readers, at any time from anywhere with a PC and Internet connection.”

Barcodes have a number of medical applications, including aiding with the dispensing of medication. Before medication is dispensed at the point-of-care, for instance, nurses would scan a barcode on both the patient and the medication. At a basic level, the scanning process would ensure that patients receive the right medication in the right dosage at the right time, preventing dangerous errors.

Barcoding also aids hospitals and other medical facilities with inventory management, admissions procedures and other bedside care procedures. In inventory management applications, barcodes will help during the stocking process as well as requiring nurses and other professionals to check inventory in and out.

When patients are admitted to an emergency room, for instance, barcodes can be attached to both their wristbands and their medical chart. By scanning the barcode, nurses would have instant access to the patient’s insurance information and medical history, which would simplify the triage process. Also, at the bedside, nurses and doctors can scan a barcode on the patient’s wristband with a mobile device, which provides them with instant access to chart information and with the ability to update that information wirelessly.

Managing mobile devices like barcode readers presents unique challenges to IT administrators. Updating both OS and application software, as well as tracking and configuring Wi-Fi, screen usage and battery usage. Security issues, as well as the creation of an integrated mobile device management program, can also be a challenge. CortexRM is one tool that could meet those challenges.
