No Power, No Internet, No Problem: Health eVillages Delivers Mobile Healthcare

In areas like Haiti, China, Uganda, Kenya and rural Louisiana, medical professionals are delivering safe and effective medical care by using mobile devices like iPods and iPads.

Physicians Interactive works to bring healthcare information, medical samples and mobile decision support tools to medical professionals in every location. The Robert F. Kennedy Center works with organizations to initiate and support sustainable social justice movements. Working together through Health eVillages, these organizations are harnessing the power of mobile to provide health care in the most challenging environments around the globe.

Health eVillages will present a workshop called, “No Power, No Internet, No Problem: Mobile HIT Improves Healthcare Worldwide” at HIMSS12 on Thursday, February 23. Donato J. Tramuto, the vice chair of Physicians Interactive and the founder and CEO of Health eVillages, will lead the presentation. “We believe everyone around the globe should have access to high-quality healthcare," said Tramuto. "At Health eVillages, we're not willing to wait.”

Through Health eVillages, physicians receive iPods and iPads that are equipped with specialized medical reference content as well as tools for medical decision support. These tools are powered by Skyscape, which delivers information about over 5,000 drugs, clinical resources on over 850 topics and medical calculators and alerts via its free Skyscape app. The app works not only on iOS but also on Blackberry and all other major mobile platforms. Through Skyscape’s eSampling service, physicians can order samples of drugs for delivery to their offices at any time of the day or night.

Part of the presentation will include a true story about how mobile technology saved the life of a mother and her infant in Lwala, Kenya, when complications occurred during the birth. In addition to providing their mobile app through Skyscape, Health eVillages delivers training for physicians to learn how to use the app as well as the appropriate mobile platform.

“We hope sharing real-world examples at HIMSS12 of how mobile technology is making a difference and improving the quality of care around the world will inspire others to join with us and get involved in Health eVillages,” Tramuto stated. The presentation will take place at 9:45 a.m. at Marco Polo 803.
