TerreStar Networks and Comneon Demo VoIP Connectivity in Lab

TerreStar Networks Inc. and Comneon announced yesterday at the CES (News - Alert) 2009 the successful demonstration of the integrated satellite-terrestrial multi-mode handset designed by Electrobit (EB) for TerreStar. VoIP connectivity was demonstrated using satellite simulation in a Comneon test lab.

TerreStar will offer an integrated satellite-terrestrial communications network which will use an IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) for delivering access and personalized applications and services over wireless devices like mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs). The TerreStar handset uses the Comneon IMS Device Framework as a client solution for its integrated mobile satellite and terrestrial communications network.

TerreStar proposes to launch a powerful commercial communications satellite and is in the process of developing a multi-mode integrated satellite-terrestrial handset in collaboration with Comneon and EB. This platform can enable mobile voice, data and video services on a secure satellite-terrestrial mobile broadband network as required by government, emergency responders, enterprise and consumers interested in “anywhere” coverage throughout the United States and Canada.

TerreStar will be able to offer users easier access to mobile applications on different terminal types by using Comneon’s portable IMS terminal framework. This is executable on various operating systems and processor architectures.

“Comneon is a key contributor to our handset ecosystem, and are creating innovative solutions that will help us bring to market an end-to end, state-of-the-art device and feature-set,” said David Marshack, Senior Vice President for Product and Device Technology. “TerreStar plans to use this technology to deliver maximum flexibility, reliability and performance.”

Christian Mucke, Managing Director of Comneon pointed out that his company’s experience in mobile software solutions and operational capabilities can enable TerreStar to deploy a fully integrated satellite and terrestrial broadband network. This is expected to offer IP applications and services to mobile customers in North America.

“We are proud to help make the TerreStar vision of a fully integrated satellite-terrestrial multi-mode handset a reality,” he added.

Comneon supplies protocol stack software for mobile communications. It serves large and small semiconductor companies, network operators and mobile terminal manufacturers.
