U.S. Fixed VoIP Services Market Experiencing Four-Year Increase: Study

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

The U.S. fixed VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services market is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.15 percent between 2012 and 2016, according to a recent report.

TechNavio said that the availability of next-generation telecom infrastructure is one of the major reasons for the jump in the market, according to a firm statement carried on TMCnet. Also, the market is seeing many subscribers switching from fixed telephones to fixed VoIP services, the report adds.

Despite these trends, worries about security could impact market increase, according to the study.

TechNavio's report, the “Fixed VoIP Services Market in the US 2012-2016,” said vendors “dominating” the market include: Comcast (News - Alert) Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc., Cablevision Systems Inc., Cox Communications Inc., and Vonage Holdings Corp. Other noteworthy vendors are Charter Communication Inc., Bright House Networks LLC, and 8x8 Inc.

In addition, earlier last year Research and Markets said TechNavio analysts predicted that the global fixed VoIP service market would increase at a CAGR of 6.46 percent between 2012 and 2016.

The increases were caused by such reasons as more adoption of fixed broadband services and a lower price for fixed VoIP equipment. Fixed broadband services are increasing in developed countries with the availability of fiber-to-home networks, the report adds.

''The Global Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Equipment market is facing intense competition,” according to one TechNavio analyst included in the global report. “In order to maintain their position in the market, VoIP equipment manufacturers are developing innovative devices with enhanced features at a low cost. In the past few years, the cost of VoIP equipment such as IP deskset, IP private branch exchange (IP PBX (News - Alert),) and other VoIP hardware has reduced significantly. This has encouraged enterprises across the globe to adopt multiple VoIP connections for their business operations. This will encourage service providers to increasingly adopt IP networks.''

Among the major global vendors are: Comcast Corp., NTT Communications Corp., France Telecom  S.A., and Softbank (News - Alert) Corp. Other key vendors are: SFR S.A., Time Warner Inc., Free Telecom Ltd., Cox Communication Inc., Cable Vision System NY, Telecom Italia Sparkle S.p.A., Verizon Communications Inc., BT Group plc, AT&T Inc., Skype (News - Alert) Inc., Fringland Ltd., Vonage Holdings Corp., Charter Communications Inc., Bright House Networks LLC., 8x8 Inc., and iBasis Inc.
