Ford Introduces MyFord Touch to Enhance Driver Experience

By Raja Singh Chaudhary, TMCnet Contributor

Ford Motor Company, a provider of automobile products and solutions has reportedly introduced MyFord Touch, a new driver connect technology that integrates modern consumer electronics screens and controls with rich graphic displays to enhance the driver’s interface with the car. The technology deploys minimal menu layering and features convenient functions and settings to ensure quick access to the driver. It also helps drivers customize the relevant information in order to face minimum distraction while driving.

MyFord Touch technology has been developed with a goal aim to provider a powerful, yet intuitive solution for drivers, combining the strengths of standard interfaces in consumer electronics such as MP3 players and mobile phones with the next generation SYNC system developed by Ford, which has been built using the Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows Embedded Auto software platform. Ford had initially developed SYNC from a standalone module providing voice-activated control for mobile devices, which has now grown to a fully integrated platform for Ford vehicles with MyFord.
The company touts MyFord Touch as a technology that will become the global interior architecture for all of its future products. According to Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, global product development at Ford, this technology, combined with new SYNC functionality, creates an experience that will cause people to fall in love with their vehicles again. Kuzak said that MyFord Touch is not just a technology, it’s an experience, and the company hopes it will have people across the globe looking forward to spending time behind the wheel of their vehicle.
Retaining the traditional car interior layout intact, MyFord Touch adds even more voice control plus full-color LCD screens to present a lot of the information visually. Drivers can customize the way the information is presented using a combination of voice controls, touch-screen technology and five-way cell phone-style buttons mounted on the steering wheel.
Ford will brand the technology as MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch on its respective Lincoln and Mercury brand products. The technology is helpful in redesigning the in-car interface, letting the driver interact with the vehicle using touch-sensitive buttons, touch screens, thumb-wheel controls and voice recognition. MyFord Touch leverages reconfigurable displays and simplified voice commands, which can be used to offer multiple layers of information to the driver, if he wants to access it.
Jason Johnson, user interface design engineer at Ford said that MyFord really is about managing information. Johnson added that driving is the priority when a person is behind the wheel, so the company made it possible to simplify the content management so its customers can drive with minimal distraction.
Recently, Ford had announced that its next-generation SYNC in-car electronics packages will include in-car WiFi (News - Alert), which is likely to drive WiFi and USB ports to be standard equipment in all cars within the next five years in addition to a bunch of other cool apps, as well.
