New Bluetooth Headset from Broadcom

By Anjishnu Biswas, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In a bid to provide noise and echo containment by means of affordable flash memory as well as digital signal processing components producing remarkably enhanced audio quality in mass market, Broadcom (News - Alert) Corporation, an international pioneer in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, has introduced a new Bluetooth audio solution.

Built on the Broadcom Bluetooth audio platform, the new single-chip ROM-based device entails highly sophisticated audio augmentation expertise in a small, low price package to assist in propelling affordable, elegant headset designs anchored in Bluetooth know-how.

Headsets are the second largest division of the Bluetooth market, with mobile handsets occupying the top slot. A large number of such headsets are likely to be utilized for hands-free connectivity in cars where noise suppression and audio quality are of paramount importance. Earlier, noise and echo containment algorithms have been normally restricted to high-end headsets that necessitate added mechanism and are more costly to produce.

Improving audio quality without the inclusion of additional expensive units, the Broadcom BCM2044S headset solution leverages a ROM-based design to put into service its exclusive SmartAudio noise and echo control algorithms.

Scott Bibaud, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Wireless Personal Area Networking line of business said in the press release, "To expand upon the leadership we've built in other Bluetooth segments, Broadcom is delivering revolutionary solutions that push the boundaries of performance and cost for wireless headsets and other audio devices," He further added, "Rounding out our new family of audio solutions, the BCM2044S and related reference design enable OEMs to differentiate their headset offerings with superior features, while reducing BOM and manufacturing costs to protect their bottom lines."

Broadcom SmartAudio expertise is backed by the company's valuable experience in processing voice, video and data traffic in enterprise networking and telecommunications infrastructure functions. It is capable of analyzing digital audio streams inside the Bluetooth headset, distinguishing between voice and non-voice traits while removing background noise to offer a more distinct and agreeable voice conversation. SmartAudio technology also automatically enhances the volume on the headset when the user treads into an environment that is noisy and effectively regulates the output to ensure the maximum level of ease for the headset user without the requirement to press any button.
