Playstation 3 Goes 3-D, Gets Motion Control

By Chris DiMarco, TMCnet Web Editor

With an update due on Sept 21, Playstation 3 will be enhancing its built in software allowing it to play 3-D Blue Ray movies.

The update, which was intended to launch later this year, has been pushed up to capitalize on the momentum that 3-D home movies have picked up in 2010. It will be offered free of charge and is similar to a patch offered earlier this year that made PS3 games 3-D capable.

Sony's announcement came as part of the annual Tokyo Game Show, which has historically been a platform for the gaming community to unveil its most recent advancements.

"The appeal and impact of games will be definitely enhanced with 3-D technology,” Sony Executive Hiroshi Kawano said in a release. Given the list of 3-D games currently in development for the Playstation 3, Kawano may be right.

However the 3-D movie capabilities of the PlayStation will still not be as robust as those of standalone 3-D Blu-ray players. Customers will have no problem viewing movies but minor features like menus and special features may not work even after the improvement.

Following another trend in gaming, Sony also showed off its motion gaming platform “Move” at the game show. The motion based controller allows players to interact with elements on screen via a wand and external sensor and is Sony’s answer to Nintendo’s Wii. The “Move” will be available in the U.S. on Sept. 19 and a starter kit including both a controller and game will be offered for $99.99, the controller alone will be offered for $49.99.

Thirty-eight million PlayStation 3s have been sold worldwide, and if this year’s Tokyo Game show is any indication; Sony is banking 3-D and motion controls games to be the next big thing in the gaming industry.
