Telit Networks, NMS Develop GSM-Based Wireless System
Natural MicroSystems announced it has partnered with Telit
Networks to develop a GSM-based in-building wireless solution that extends
the power of the office phone to mobile handsets. NMS' TX 3220C and
Fusion/Convergence Generation (CG) 6000C platform products are at the
foundation of the system, along with custom software developed by NMS'
NaturalEdge Engineering Consulting group. The Nanonet system, specifically
targeted for short-range areas such as enterprises or campuses, will allow
corporate users to use their mobile phones like any other fixed phone
connected to the PBX. Users will place internal calls using only the
internal extension number, place external calls through the PBX, and be

Alcatel Unveils Photonic Cross-Connect For Optical
Networking
Alcatel introduced the CrossLight photonic cross-connect. This
optical system will enable communications carriers and service providers
to build highly intelligent, all-optical communications networks that
deliver greater capacity at reduced cost. The CrossLight photonic
cross-connect routes light through its all-optical switching matrix,
eliminating the optical-electrical conversion typical in existing
electrical broadband cross-connect systems. In contrast to an electrical
broadband cross-connect, which can handle only a fixed amount of traffic,
CrossLight's capacity can increase as a customer's need for bandwidth
grows. In addition, CrossLight will enable carriers and service providers
to allocate bandwidth on demand for the busiest parts of their network

Margins Are Up For Long-Distance Resellers, Says
Research Group
While long-distance players merge faster than cars on a freeway, the
remaining companies remaining are driving their businesses smoothly.
According to the ninth annual survey of long-distance resellers, conducted
by the Boston-based telecommunications strategy and research firm,
ATLANTIC-ACM, operating margins are climbing upward. "Companies have
been cutting internal costs, lowering wholesale contract rates, and
enjoying the results of reduced access charges," explains Dr. Judy
Reed Smith, CEO of ATLANTIC-ACM. Results for residential accounts show
more dramatic evidence of this than business accounts. The percentage of
respondents with operating margins over 50 percent for residential
domestic accounts more than doubled from 8 percent in 1998 to 17 percent
in 2000. For residential international accounts, more than 20 percent of
companies expect greater than 50 percent margins in 2000.
