Lucent Provides Access With ORINOCO
Lucent Technologies has introduced several new access products in the
ORINOCO family, including the ORINOCO Home Networking System and the
AS-1000 Access Server. The ORINOCO Home Networking System is a high-speed
(11 Mbps) wireless networking system for SOHO users for both Windows and
Apple computers. The system consists of the ORINOCO PC Card radios, the
PCI and ISA adapters, and the RG-100 Residential Gateway (pictured).
Providing a range of up to 1500 feet, and operating in the 2.4 GHz band,
the Home Networking System includes built-in Network Address Translation
(NAT) routing and automatic DHCP to set up the user's station parameters
for network and Internet connection. The ORINOCO AS-1000 Access Server
provides secure, wireless IP Internet access for busy public places such
as airports, hotels, and convention centers. Users can log on through
ORINOCO PC Cards in their laptops, or by using Lucent WaveLAN PC Cards and
most other IEEE 802-11b-compliant wireless LAN cards.

T&S Software Intros Zeus IP-PBX, Integrates With
Taqua OCX
T&S Software has introduced the Zeus IP-PBX, which links
users' PCs and phones, allows for use of VoIP in the enterprise, and
requires only a single network connection to the desktop. Zeus also allows
for the integration of unified messaging so that voice, e-mail, and fax
messages can be administered from one location. Additional modules allows
for ACD and least cost routing functionality. T&S Software is also
integrating Zeus with Taqua Systems' Open Compact Exchange (OCX) switch, a
Class 5 access switch that scales up to 10,000 users. "The key word
is flexibility," said Karen Shelton, president and CEO of T&S
Software. "Taqua and T&S have created a dynamic platform where
any number of services may be active and used in numerous combinations
across the network."

PRIMA Supports Speech Rec
PRIMA has announced partnership agreements with Locus Dialogue,
Nuance Communications, and SpeechWorks International. PRIMA will support
Locus's SoftDialogue v3.0 through the integration of ActiveX controls, as
well as continuing to support Nuance's core technologies. PRIMA will also
integrate SpeechWorks technology into its OPUS Maestro CT platform/SCE,
allowing PRIMA to deploy speech-enabled solutions such as voice browsing,
voice dialing, and unified messaging to enterprises and public networks.

Polycom Broadband Initiative, New IP-Only ViewStation FX
Polycom has launched its IPriority initiative, a multi-phase
strategy which emphasizes IP-centric voice and video, QoS, voice/video
over DSL, enhanced directory services and system management, and business
development in the broadband IP communications realm. Polycom has also
announced the first implementation of this new initiative in the
ViewStation FX H.323, an IP-only video communications system targeted at
early video over IP adopters and available through Polycom's reseller
network. Enhancements to the ViewStation FX H.323 include network and
traffic management tools, such as gatekeeper support, on-screen
diagnostics, and IP precedence and packet control to help ensure packet
delivery even on congested networks.

Toshiba Enters CommServer Market With Strata CS
Toshiba America Information Systems, Telecommunication Systems
Division has introduced the Toshiba Strata CS, a software-driven
communications server that makes advanced telephony features available
through the desktop PC. Operating on a single open architecture-based
server, the Strata CS provides users with GUI-based control of their calls
and voice mail. In addition to standard analog, T/E1, and ISDN PRI trunks,
Strata CS provides an internal VoIP gateway to allow for VoIP
communications between multiple sites, such as between a main office and a
home or branch office. Additional features include: full call control
(call transfer, conferencing, park, etc.), message screening, integration
with e-mail, auto-attendant, and more.

SyncML Initiative Promotes Data Synchronization
IBM, Lotus, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Psion, and Starfish Software
have announced the founding of the SyncML Initiative, which will develop
and promote an open industry specification for universal data
synchronization of remote data and personal information across multiple
networks, platforms, and devices. SyncML is an XML-based protocol designed
to create the optimal mobile computing experience by supporting
interoperable wireless and wireline data synchronization products across
corporate servers, Web servers, computers, laptops, PDAs, handheld
computers, mobile phones, and other mobile devices, regardless of platform
or manufacturer.

Palm, Sun Micro, iPlanet Move On Enterprise Wireless
Palm, Sun Microsystems, and iPlanet have announced plans to
develop and end-to-end solution that will provide global wireless access
to enterprise applications and services via the Palm OS handheld
computers. This will help mobile professionals to access corporate
applications anytime, from anywhere. iPlanet plans to add support for
Palm's Web clipping architecture and handheld units to iPlanet's Wireless
Server software.

Artisoft Joins Microsoft Windows Telecom Alliance
Artisoft has announced its membership in Microsoft's Windows
Telecommunications Alliance, an industry program designed to support
network equipment providers, ISVs, and systems integrators delivering
Windows-based telecom solutions for both the enterprise and service
provider markets. Artisoft's participation in the program means that
Artisoft and Microsoft will share information and resources for the
development, marketing, sales, and support of TeleVantage, Artisoft's
PC-PBX. TeleVantage has always been optimized for use with Microsoft
technologies, including Windows NT Server, SQL Server, Outlook, and
Exchange Server.

COMVURGENT Launches PBXibitor Demo Tool
COMVURGENT has announced the release of the PBXibitor, a PBX
emulator for demonstrating digital PBX and phone functionality without
requiring a full PBX. The PBXibitor provides dial tone, ring tone, caller
ID, and can emulate voice mail and unified messaging system features and
how these features would work with a digital phone. It can also work with
popular CTI applications, such as ACD, screen pop, IVR, and logging and
monitoring. The PBXibitor allows salespeople and other personnel to
