Japanese equipment maker Fujitsu has signed a term sheet that sets the stage to license the entire patent portfolio of Wi-LAN Inc., a Ottawa, Canada company.
Wi-LAN’s patent portfolio includes wireless WiMAX technology. Fujitsu has previously licensed some of Wi-LAN's patents compliant with the 802.16d wireless communications standard.
Under the terms of the preliminary deal, Fujitsu will pay cash as well as to transfer some of its own patents to Wi-LAN. Wi-LAN, which gave no financial details about the deal, has a history of licensing patents for telecom products.
"As the fourth company to sign under our Early Licence Program, Fujitsu will join a growing list of companies that are recognizing the significance of our intellectual property to both current and future products," said Wi-LAN chief executive Jim Skippen in a statement.
Wi-LAN said it is in the process of obtaining an independent valuation for these patents.
