Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Co. Selects Airspan's Next Gen Broadband Wireless Access Network

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Co. (GT&T) has awarded Airspan a $4.5 million contract to upgrade its broadband wireless access network in the licensed 3.5Ghz frequency band, using its HiperMAX platform and customer premises equipment.

The wireless network will support a full offering of GT&T’s voice and broadband data services and next generation applications. The network will also expand the carrier’s footprint to bring enhanced and broader coverage throughout Guyana.

GT&T is reportedly targeting 6,800 subscribers in the coastal Essequibo region during the first phase of its wireless initiative.

“We are very pleased to have been chosen by GT&T,” said Amit Ancikovsky, Airspan's vice president & general manager, South America in a statement to the press.

Ancikovsky believes this project represents an important new win in the Americas and is in line with their strategy of supplying and supporting significant high-end wireless networks in the region.

Airspan is committed to working with GT&T to deploy this network in a short period of time and in providing continuous support for its operations and future growth.

“After working on this complex project for some time now, we are excited about moving forward with Airspan to pioneer high-end wireless services in our country,” said Major General (retired) Joseph G. Singh, chief executive officer / general manager of GT&T.

Singh said their company is committed to provide their customers with a broad range of telecommunication services with high, carrier-grade quality. He is confident that using their robust, efficient and high-performance wireless network the company will be able to provide increased voice and broadband connectivity services for current and new subscribers.

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company is a fixed Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) based in Guyana, South America.

Airspan Networks provides wireless voice and broadband data systems and solutions for the fixed and mobile WiMAX and WiFi (News - Alert) markets, including Voice over IP.
