Post University Deploys Aruba's 802.11n Wi-Fi Networks

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Aruba Networks, Inc. a company specializing in wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions, reportedly announced that Post University will be deploying its 802.11n Wi-Fi networks across its 58-acre Waterbury, CT campus.

Post University offers a traditional on-campus environment besides providing an on-line program also. The university wanted to meet the demands of faculty, students and staff for universal wireless access and use a comprehensive campus-wide network with state-of-the-art performance that offered continued support for upgrades, when required.

Aruba’s 802.11n solution was selected and the network was installed by Apex (News - Alert) Systems, Inc. an authorized partner of Aruba.

“I was looking for a cutting-edge solution that would help the university realize its vision of providing a ‘gold standard’ wireless experience that enables faculty, staff and students to use the network as a flexible, secure teaching and learning tool wherever they are on campus,” said Michael Statmore, Post University’s director of university IT in a news release.

Statmore said that this new system converts all the classrooms in the university into ‘smart rooms’ which can support interactive two-way video broadcasts, electronic white boarding, and on-line multi-media applications. There is no need to sacrifice security to realize the full potential of these tools, he said.

The new system features network access control with endpoint compliance, wireless intrusion detection, and common policies for wireless and wired network access so that students, faculty, and staff using desktop computers experience enhanced performance similar to laptops.

All the classrooms, lecture halls, administrative buildings, dormitories, and even outside gathering places in Post University were covered by the new network. Aruba’s Adaptive Radio Management or ARM (News - Alert) technology delivers optimized wireless experience in all the locations around campus.

“We evaluated a wide field of potential vendors for our campus build-out, from the very largest to the smallest niche Wi-Fi array manufacturer,” Statmore said. “From the outset, Aruba stood out.”

Aruba officials explained that ARM uses infrastructure-based controls to enhance Wi-Fi client performance in real-time. Wi-Fi clients can work individually and need not always work in tandem with other clients or select optimal band, channel and access points which become difficult in densely packed areas. ARM controls the way Wi-Fi clients interact to maintain network resources and airtime as required by data, voice and video applications.
