India University Installs Proxim's Wi-Fi Mesh Equipment for Secure WLAN

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Chandigarh, India-based Punjab Engineering College, or “PEC,” University of Technology has installed Proxim Wireless’s (News - Alert) Wi-Fi mesh equipment in order to have a secure wireless Local Area Network, or “WLAN,” for their residential faculty areas.

Proxim Wireless is a provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play of voice, video, data and mobility to all organizations. The Department of Information Technology in the Ministry of Communications & IT of the Government of India has funded this Wi-Fi mesh deployment project.

According to Proxim officials, the company’s mesh technology enables municipal and service provider network managers to simplify Wi-Fi deployment for their broadband citywide and public safety networks. Their unique ORiNOCO Mesh Creation Protocol, or
“OMCP,” can be used to make easy-to-deploy self-forming and self-healing non-line of sight, or “NLOS,” mesh networks.

PEC officials said that they chose Proxim after evaluating several products and determining that adding centralized WLAN switches was cost prohibitive. By installing ORiNOCO AP-4000MR-LR and AP-4900MR-LR products, the company was able to build dependable and secure wireless mesh network and through that offer high-performance access to residential areas.

Divya, chief investigator of the sponsored project at PEC, said that the wireless mesh network was required to be deployed as a part of a sponsored project from the Indian Government in order to perform experiments relating to the draft 802.11s standard for conducting real time experiments, testing and validation of results. With the mesh, PEC was able to install the much needed secure, scalable and reliable wireless connectivity.

Sanjeev Sofat, Professor and the Head of Department of Computer Science & Engineering at PEC, said that the Wi-Fi mesh network is being used both as an experimental test-bed and to offer wireless connectivity to the faculty residential areas of PEC.

Recently, Proxim Wireless introduced 4G Backhaul product lines and Proxim and NetLogix provided application preparation services and resources.
