Motorola and Kineto Validate UMA-Based Fixed-Line VoIP Solution

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Kineto Wireless Inc. has announced the successful conclusion of interoperability testing between the Motorola (News - Alert) UMA-enabled Residential Seamless Mobility Gateway (RSG) and Kineto’s UMA Network Controller (UNC) solution. The companies have also successfully completed an operator field trial of the RSG3500.

The Motorola RSG3500 is a commercially available residential services gateway with UMA-enabled terminal adaptor capabilities used to provide fixed-line VoIP services from a mobile operator. Mobile operators can use the RSG3500’s two RJ-11 analog phone ports to deliver dial tone to the fixed line in subscriber’s homes over the broadband access network.

The RSG3500 boasts a full-featured, 4-port router and integrated 802.11 b/g WiFi radio to create a robust and secure home data network. The RSG3500 has been especially designed for seamless mobility, containing advanced packet routing and prioritization for VoIP services; 802.11i for security, including support for WPA2; and advanced power saving technology.

According to Kevin Keefe, vice president, Motorola Connected Home Solutions, mobile operators need solutions to deliver high quality fixed-line telephone service into subscriber’s homes to accelerate fixed-to-mobile substitution.

“The Motorola RSG3500 is a full-featured residential services gateway solution, ideal for the mobile operator to deliver reliable, seamless, mobile voice and data solutions. Working with Kineto, we are able to bridge the gap between mobile service and VoIP,” said Keefe in a press release.

There are many advantages of a UMA-enabled terminal adaptor for subscribers. A fixed-line telephone service can be received by the consumers from their existing mobile service provider. A single bill can be received by the subscribers from the mobile provider and according to the service plan, use a single, common family “bucket” of minutes for fixed line calls as well as mobile calls.

“For mobile operators, leveraging UMA technology to deliver fixed-line VoIP services is a low risk, high reward service opportunity,” said Ken Kolderup, vice president of marketing for Kineto Wireless.

“The Motorola RSG3500 is an ideal solution for taking advantage of this service opportunity,” he concluded.

Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology is the 3GPP global standard for fixed-mobile convergence. UMA enables secure, scaleable access to mobile voice, data and IMS services over broadband IP access networks.

Motorola is known around the world for innovation in wireless and broadband communications.

Kineto Wireless is the key innovator and supplier of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology.
