Report: 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games Affects Global Wireless Infrastructure in Third Quarter

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In a recent report released by EJL Wireless Research, entitled “Global Wireless OEM Financial Results Q3 2008”, it indicated that there was a mere 3.7 percent increase in the global wireless BTS infrastructure market revenues for the top original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) - for the third quarter of 2008.

Reports indicated that there was only $12.2 billion revenue earned when compared with the third quarter of 2007.

According to Earl Lum, founder and president of EJL Wireless, there was a decline in the market on a sequential basis of 12 percent in third quarter of 2008. The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games in China is said to be the reason behind this decline as all wireless equipment vendors were impacted by it.

In second quarter of 2008, the report indicated that the global wireless BTS infrastructure market revenues for the top OEMs had increased by 14.5 percent with a figure of $13.8 billion, when compared to the second quarter of 2007.

EJL Wireless said the this latest report also includes some of its view points on the global wireless infrastructure revenues for many wireless OEMs including Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert), Nortel Networks, and ZTE.

Lum further added: "Given the undeniable decline in cap ex spending by mobile operators due to the global financial crisis, we believe that weakness could continue into Q4 and that overall revenues in USD may be flat to down 1-2% for 2008 compared with our prior outlook of 5-7 percent growth."

According to EJL Wireless, the results in the report show a realistic snapshot for the wireless industry on how the overall market is progressing for 2008, as Huawei (News - Alert) Technologies was the only company that did not have its presence in this financial analysis.

EJL Wireless Research is a provider of analysis and consulting services of wireless technology ecosystems. The research firm mainly performs research on all vertical elements of the wireless ecosystem including mobile subscribers, mobile operators, mobile handsets, mobile infrastructure and mobile content.
