Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless announced Friday that it that in order to enhance and improve the company's voice and data wireless network across South Carolina, it invested over $131 million for 2006 this year, which added up to the company's total investment over the past six years to $445 million.
The mobile operator also launched its Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) third generation (3G) wide-area network in selected markets in the state of South Carolina, including Columbia, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston. Verizon Wireless' national EV-DO network now includes 181 major metropolitan areas and is reportedly available to approximately 200 million Americans nationwide.
"Providing our customers with a reliable network requires the commitment to invest millions of dollars every year to deliver dependable wireless coverage," said Jerry Fountain, Verizon Wireless Carolinas/Tennessee region president in a statement. "By bringing our EV-DO network to South Carolina this year, we have given residents better options for their wireless high-speed data needs."
The mobile operator recently announced a more than $146 million investment for its network in neighboring North Carolina. The investment includes Verizon Wireless' deployment of wireless service in eastern North Carolina markets including Wilmington, Greenville, Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, Goldsboro, New Bern and Jacksonville.
Verizon Wireless made news yesterday when it announced that it expanded its Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) third generation (3G) wide-area network coverage in selected areas in the state of Tennessee. The move will provide more Tennessee residents with access to high-speed business and entertainment-based services on their wireless devices.
The move will allow more Verizon Wireless customers in Athens, Morristown, Sweetwater, Talbott, White Pine, Witt, West Memphis, Marion, Hernando and Walls, Tennessee to experience the high-speed wireless service.
