iPass Surpasses 20,000 Hours of Wi-Fi Usage on TeliaSonera Network

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

iPass recently saw its 20,000th hour of Wi-Fi usage on the TeliaSonera (News - Alert) HomeRun Wi-Fi network which covers Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Lithuania. iPass said they began activating the network earlier this year after signing a roaming agreement with TeliaSonera and since April 2008, their users have been able to connect seamlessly to more than 1,800 hotspots as the venues have rolled into the iPass (News - Alert) roaming network.

René Hendrikse, managing director EMEA, iPass, noted that the Nordic and Baltic regions are becoming ever more popular with business travelers.

“We are delighted that iPass has become TeliaSonera’s first software-based inbound roaming partner, and thrilled with the success we have had in the region with blue-chip enterprise customers such as Nokia (News - Alert), Scania and the Volvo Group,” stated Hendrikse.

TeliaSonera HomeRun hotspots went through the iPass Enterprise Ready certification process before becoming fully integrated. The hotspots were tested for high availability as well as interoperability with policy and security tools, including a comprehensive range of virtual private networks, personal firewalls and anti-virus software packages.

TeliaSonera HomeRun’s hotspots are available in a number of public spots including airports, railway stations, and hotels, which provide business people with reliable methods of connection. iPass explains that their users are using these new hotspots across the region, which went live in April. Sweden and Finland have proved to be the most popular countries out of all the hotspots.

The company said that hotels accounted for more than half of the total connections. While SAS (News - Alert) Radisson and Best Western were among the key locations, the most popular hotel was the Quality Hotel in Gothenburg, Sweden. This facility recorded more than 500 hours of connectivity, according to iPass. Other locations included more than 20 domestic and international airports. Stockholm’s international airport was the most popular with users connecting not only within the terminal itself, but also within the terminal’s train station.

iPass currently provides customers with access to over 50,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in Europe and over 100,000 worldwide. The company was recently in news when it partnered with Internet Initiative Japan (News - Alert) (IIJ), one of Japan's top Internet access and network solution providers. The alliance enables iPass to expand its Mobile Broadband service offering in Japan by adding the NTT DOCOMO and EMOBILE networks through IIJ's MVNO service.
