Carphone Warehouse Releases Webbook, the Ultra Mobile Personal Computer

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Carphone Warehouse (News - Alert) has announced the launch of its webbook, the world’s first 10.2” notebook. The webbook will be available for free on contract in the company’s stores as well as through its online store (www.carphonewarehouse.com ) from this month onwards.

Carphone Warehouse is an independent retailer of mobile phones and services in Europe. The company has more than 2,400 stores in nine countries. The Telecoms business of Carphone Warehouse, which contributes half of the Group’s revenue, currently is set to drive future growth.

The webbook will run on either Linux or Windows XP and is integrated with Wi-Fi, Web Browser, 3 USB ports, 1.6 GHz processor, 512MB memory and built in memory card readers. The Wi-Fi enables users to take full advantage of their Carphone Warehouse TalkTalk broadband connection. The webbook weighs 1.3kg.

The webbook provides basic word processing and spreadsheet software along with the ability to access the internet, download music and access emails. This is the ideal notebook for busy professionals. The display size of the screen is 10.2” and it facilitates full size document and file viewing. The webbook has a fully-enabled standard 84 key QWERTY keyboard, which is equal to a high performance laptop. The different colors available for the device are white and black. The standard model has 2GB solid state flash memory which can also be substituted for a 2.5in hard disk drive.

The webbook will be available free of charge when users take a broadband package from Carphone Warehouse. A wide range of webbooks powered by Elonex Technology will be released later this year. There are five fundamental rules at Carphone Warehouse based on which everything is done.

1.) It we don’t look after the customer, someone else will.
2.) Nothing is gained by winning an argument but losing a customer.
3.) Always deliver what we promise. If in doubt, under promise and over deliver.
4.) Always treat customers as we ourselves would like to be treated.
5.) The reputation of the whole company is in the hands of each individual.

These rules are applied in the company’s stores, call centers and support functions to ensure that best possible customer experience is provided at all times.
