Ruckus Wireless, a manufacturer of Smart Wi-Fi technology and wireless LAN systems used by enterprises and carriers, announced a smart mobile Wireless-Fidelity (Wi-Fi) portfolio to enable operators to strategically integrate 802.11 with cellular networks.
The portfolio includes new mobile Wi-Fi gateways, aimed at helping mobile operators cleanly integrate carrier-purposed Smart Wi-Fi technology into 3G and 4G infrastructures.
With Ruckus’ new products, telecom service providers will be able to deliver Wi-Fi services more cost effectively. Mobile operators are expected to utilize their existing mobile core networks to realize capacity relief and enhance the user experience. Ruckus will give operators a head start in the broadband race to create a heterogeneous network footprint.
“What the Internet did to transform how we access content and services, the mobile Internet is now doing to liberate when and where we can get access,” said Selina Lo (News - Alert), president and CEO of Ruckus Wireless, in a statement. “Wi-Fi is becoming an integral part of the mobile network fabric that enables this revolution. Its role in the mobile Internet ecosystem will endure as long as the appetite for access continues unabated, even with LTE (News - Alert) becoming a reality.”
With Wi-Fi embedded in virtually every mobile Internet device, common hotspot services have quickly become a required offering among competitive carriers.
Wi-Fi hotspots are becoming a cost effective way for operators to improve wireless capacity in areas of high usage. Operators are looking at reducing the pressures on 3G infrastructures on account of the explosion of mobile Internet data traffic.
The lack of integration between Wi-Fi hotspots and cellular networks is affecting operators from delivering a seamless and consistent subscriber experience to the exploding population of smartphone and tablet users.
The Ruckus Mobile Wi-Fi portfolio features Wireless Services Gateway (News - Alert) (WSG). The new Wi-Fi gateway acts as a central point of control for Smart Wi-Fi access points, while enabling seamless service integration with the mobile core.
In a recent development, Ruckus Wireless (News - Alert) announced that the public Wi-Fi network deployed at Sundance Film Festival using smart Wi-Fi technology from Ruckus Wireless offloaded terabytes of data from local cellular networks, delivering high capacity broadband access to Sundance moviegoers.
