Expansion is key to the future of the telecom industry. And Nokia (News - Alert) Siemens Networks seems to be doing this with a clear focus. In their latest move, Nokia Siemens Networks has joined hands with Airvana, Inc., a provider of network infrastructure products, to embed a femto cell solution for mobile operators worldwide.

 

This agreement will enable 3G operators to enhance their coverage and offer new voice and mobile broadband data services at a very reasonable cost.

 

Femto cells, otherwise termed as Home Base Station Solutions are gaining in popularity because of their capacity to terminate signal problems for connectivity. 3G femto cells are small cellular access points that offer a high-speed broadband Internet connection into the home or office to provide enhanced mobile voice, video and data services.

 

Airvana's (News - Alert) UMTS Home Base Station is a femto cell access point which is capable of offering uninterrupted and improved coverage with enhanced high-speed Internet connectivity. The product is being certified to interoperate with Nokia Siemens Networks' Femto Gateway (News - Alert) to connect to a 3GPP core network.

 

Timo Hyppola, Indoor Radio Solutions Product Line, Nokia Siemens (News - Alert) Networks commented in a statement to the press," Delivering operators a complete, standards-based femto cell solution will enable them to offer new services and expand relationships with their customers. Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert) is a strong proponent of employing open interfaces, a philosophy shared by Airvana. Operators now have greater flexibility and choice thanks to the compatibility of Femto customer premises equipment with our open architecture. This approach provides us the flexibility we need to best meet the demands of the market."

 

The deal allows both the companies to share their expertise to market and sell the femto cell solution to mobile operators worldwide and can independently supply the product to the operators.

 

With initial trials positioned for the end of 2007, deployments should start in 2008.
