French Prefer to Download Music, Games, Direct From Service Providers
By Patrick Barnard, Group Managing Editor, TMCnet
A new study from Strategy Analytics (News - Alert) shows that French broadband users are more likely to buy online content, such as music and games, directly from their telecom service providers, as opposed to retail outlets such as Apple iTunes and Amazon.com (News - Alert).
“While unlawful P2P downloading is still a widespread phenomenon in France, about a quarter of French broadband users paid to download some form of online content in the last year,” said Jia Wu, analyst at Strategy Analytics’ Digital Consumer Practice and author of the report, in a release. “Online retailers are now jostling for position in the emerging market for downloadable content in France.”

Competition among broadband providers in France is fierce -- and many of them are now starting to offer music downloads and games in order to differentiate themselves. Apparently, some providers have done such a good job of marketing these new services that their customers feel they don’t need to look elsewhere for downloadable content.
The survey polled 500 broadband users.
