UC Could Take Generation to Accomplish

Industry hype makes unified communications (UC) sound like it will cause seismic shifts across the world of business, according to In-Stat (News - Alert), a high-tech market research firm that released a study on the topic.

But in the long run, some big predictions may prove accurate because definitions of UC are so broad, with reports on uptake quoting big numbers, such as 50 percent of enterprises evaluating, installing or running UC applications, In-Stat says.

“Real transformational changes will take more time, perhaps even a generation, to accomplish,” says David Lemelin, In-Stat analyst. “But it’s possible that a new generation, dubbed ‘Millennials,’ bringing to the workplace communications habits formed in their early years (text messaging, social networking, blogging, etc.), portends more rapid adoption.”

Recent research by In-Stat found that worldwide UC product revenues will reach $18 billion in 2012; In-Stat’s survey of VoIP demonstrates messaging in the most mature aspect of UC; and conferencing is the most compelling near-term opportunity for providers.

The research, “Unified Communications (News - Alert): A Clash of Titans,” covers the worldwide market for UC. It provides forecasts of traditional voice mail, unified messaging, and unified communications port shipments and revenues through 2012. It also includes an analysis of equipment market shares in the messaging market as well as unified communications supplier strategies.

Unified communications is an industry term used to describe all forms of call and multimedia/cross-media message management functions controlled by an individual user for both business and social purposes. This could include fixed and mobile voice, e-mail, instant messaging, desktop applications, Internet Protocol (IP-PBX (News - Alert)), voice over IP (VoIP), voice-mail, fax, audio video, web conferencing, unified messaging and unified voicemail into a single environment offering a complete, but simpler experience.

In-Stat’s insights are derived from both an understanding of technology and comprehensive research, which examines each segment of the value chain for each market. Regular and ongoing end-user demand and primary research surveys underpin much of the analysis, enabling In-Stat to provide incisive market knowledge and guidance on future market opportunities via syndicated research products, custom consulting, and advisory services.
