Juniper Networks Unveils New Upgrades Said to Double Capacity

Today, Juniper Networks (News - Alert)  announced their newest capacity upgrade for the TXP (News - Alert) multi-chassis routing system, providing a substantial boost for the T Series Core Router line, including the T4000 and the T1600 line of core routers.

With multi-chassis systems still a vital part of service providers' infrastructure, the difficulties now largely lie in not only providing the necessary capacity to keep bandwidth flowing, but doing so in a way that allows for necessary expansions over time, as well as in a way that ensures minimal down time to launch those expansions. Scalability helps protect investment, which in turn allows service providers to continue operating, and doing so at a reasonable return on investment.

That's why the new capacity upgrade was so thoroughly vital to Juniper Networks' server lineup; allowing for an easy way to expand the capacity of current hardware means that service providers wouldn't need to get their hands on new equipment, and try to make that new equipment work with their old equipment. Or worse, having to shut down the old equipment, leaving the network crippled or otherwise inaccessible while the new equipment was installed.

Given the increased demands for bandwidth thanks to things like always-on devices as well as the steady growth and expansion in the streaming media market, infrastructure in turn will be increasingly heavily taxed, and require easy ways to grow without requiring down time. We've recently seen an overview of future growth in the ways we use the Internet right here from our own senior editor Peter Bernstein, and his entire point underscores the need for a robust environment that can grow as necessary without the need for shutting down networks to install new equipment.

And Juniper Networks has been heavily involved in ensuring that the necessary infrastructure can grow with demand without excessive down time, as evidenced by the T Series routers, which are currently part of the top 200 networks worldwide, with over 7,000 such routers currently operational therein. With the TXP multi-chassis routing system in place, supporting up to four times the capacity for the T4000 and eight times the capacity for the T1600, as well as 22 terabits per second of capacity overall and future expansion of up to 64 terabits—nearly three times the capacity—it's clear that Juniper wants to not only be the provider of note today, but the provider of note for the foreseeable future.

Offering that kind of capacity today makes it easy to wonder what the capacity will look like on future models, and just how easily those models will integrate into current setups. If the future looks anything like the present—and it generally tends to with some small tweaks—then Juniper Networks will have a great lineup for some time to come.
