IPTV Adoption to Reach over 70 Million by 2014: SNL Kagan

IPTV (News - Alert) adoption has increased at a 92.4 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past six years, according to SNL Kagan.
IPTV subscriptions are expected to grow from 40 million in 2010 to more than 70 million by 2014.
According to the report, IPTV video service revenues will grow from $12.9 billion in 2010 to $27 billion in 2014, equal to 11 percent of global pay-TV revenues.
“Although IPTV presently accounts for just 6% of the world’s pay-TV subscribers, the platform is fueling hyper-competition and video service innovation in major markets globally,” said Julija Jurkevic, Media and Communications analyst at SNL Kagan, in a statement.
“Telcos often provide the spark igniting consumer interest in multi-screen services, HD and VOD, generating in parallel support for investment in next generation broadband networks,” Jurkevic added.
The IPTV findings are based on the in-depth analysis of the top 75 media economies in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific by the media information provider SNL Kagan.
Western Europe will continue to lead IPTV subscriptions, reaching 26.7 million households by 2014, according to the report.
China will become the second largest IPTV market in the world, reaching 12.4 million IPTV subscribers by 2014. Because of Chinese growth, U.S. will become the third largest IPTV market.
Latin America and Eastern Europe will see subscriber increases at respective 114 percent and 24.4 percent compound annual growth rates between 2010 and 2014.
A handful of telcos are driving the IPTV service business. The top five operators accounting for 44.3 percent of the global IPTV subscriber base in 2010.
According to MRG’s Global IPTV Market Leaders Report, the IPTV market is exhibiting an unbounded growth rate in terms of the number of vendors. The total number of operators has increased by a massive 22 since the second quarter of 2010.
