Infonetics Reports UMA A Rising Technology

The latest report of Infonetics Research notes that Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) as a technology which is slowly pushing its way to a booming presence.

The fixed-mobile convergence market, including UMA network controllers, multi-access convergence gateways, and dual mode cellular/WiFi phones is growing silently and the number of subscribers are anticipated to reach $46.3 billion by 2010, according to the "FMC Equipment, Phones, and Subscribers Market Outlook," report by Infonetics.

By enabling roaming and quick handover between GSM and GPRS core network services using dual mode handsets, UMA is a technology which is gaining fast and wide adoption.

UMA is also a welcoming platform for operators as it encourages high definition voice and data services to subscribers over WLAN, and increases deployment of new services at a reduced cost.

"UMA, which was believed to have short legs just a year ago, is the predominant technology deployed today to implement seamless FMC between wireless LAN and 2G cellular networks. For those who still believe UMA will be short lived, it can now support 3G, is backed by the 3GPP, has a clear migration roadmap to IMS, and is becoming the default case for femtocells," said Stéphane Téral, principal analyst at Infonetics Research.

The report clarifies that the intense competition and variations of FMC (fixed-mobile convergence) in the market have created a whirlpool that has forced many operators to accept and adopt UMA.
