Vonage and Verizon in Court This Week Over VoIP Infringement

TMCnet Contributing Editor

VoIP service provider Vonage and Verizon (News - Alert) Communications are due to appear in an Alexandria, Va. federal court to deliver open arguments for a multiple patent infringement case on Wednesday. Verizon had filed suit against Vonage last June alleging that the VoIP provider violated seven of the telecom's patents including wireless telephony technology, voicemail and call forwarding.

Verizon is yet to specify the monetary compensation it seeks for the damages in the suit, however, the telecom is certainly after stopping Vonage (News - Alert) from further utilizing the technologies it lists as being infringed. In a USA TODAY news report, Brooke Schulz, a Vonage spokeswoman, addressed the topic of a possible service shut down following an unfavorable lawsuit decision for the provider: "Customers shouldn't worry. We're working on a redesign plan." Vonage currently serves a reported 2 million customers, a considerable chunk of the more than 8 million users nationwide.

Vonage contests that its service is comprised of a bundle of its own proprietary technology and technology licensed from third parties.
