Annapolis Residents Get Free WiFi

The City of Annapolis is about to go wireless — for free.  Local wireless provider Annapolis Wireless is hosting a ceremony Friday, April 29 to officially launch the free WiFi (News - Alert) network powered by Nortel’s wireless mesh technology.  Annapolis will be the first Maryland city to offer free WiFi.

In one sense, the launch will group Annapolis with such cities as Philadelphia, Houston, and New Orleans, which have all built free WiFi networks within their city limits.  Annapolis, however, distinguishes itself from the others by selling sponsorships and advertising to fund the project rather than using taxpayer dollars.

“We had advertisers and sponsors before we even launched the WiFi service city-wide, proving that businesses clearly see the value in reaching a targeted audience. It's because of the public-private partnerships that have been happening that we're able to provide this free service to the residents and businesses of Annapolis,” said Phil McQuade, president of Annapolis Wireless.

Anyone with a wireless network card can access the WiFi service in Annapolis. Users simply launch their web browser, which points to www.annapoliswireless.com. The first time, users create a profile, user ID and password. They can then browse the Internet using the WiFi service.

Initially, coverage will be available throughout Annapolis, from the City Dock to West Street and Eastport. Expansion of the signal beyond downtown is planned throughout the summer.

The deployment in Annapolis uses mesh networking, which allows APs to double as network extenders, resulting in saved money and expanded coverag. Mesh networking solutions are ideal for situations where broadband reach is needed beyond the capabilities of traditional WLANs.
Nortel (News - Alert) provides a secure, scalable solution that enables seamless roaming in areas that do not (or cannot) support a wired backhaul. Wireless mesh networking is also a perfect answer for providing coverage in large, open areas — both indoors and out.

“Providing free WiFi service to Annapolis is an important step in furthering our goal of making Maryland an attractive destination to live, work and visit. This private sponsorship creates a community environment for Maryland citizens, tourists, and the technology sector where everyone wins,” said Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr.
