Dairylea Selects Quintum Tenor DX Series VoIP

Quintum Technologies, a subsidiary of Network Equipment Technologies recently announced today that Dairylea Cooperative, the Northeast's largest milk marketer, has selected Quintum's Tenor DX Series VoIP switches and gateways to support its implementation of Microsoft Unified Communications (UC).

With this implementation, Dairylea has been able to successfully deploy Microsoft UC in its existing network and telecom environment, which features a 7-year-old Avaya Definity PBX. By connecting Microsoft UC users' IP phones through the Tenor to the PBXhttp://www. tmcnet.com/snapshots/snapshots.aspx?Company=PBX, they can call non-UC users inside and outside the company, just as they did before this implementation. It was not necessary to make any modification of the PBX.

According to Jim Snodgrass, president of Siiker Communications, the consultancy that is managing Dairylea's Microsoft UC initiative, Quintum provided superior technical support while also offering a more effective hardware solution.

Serta Wakes to NEC Sphericall Solution

NEC Unified Solutions Inc., (NEC) a provider of enterprise business communications solutions, has announced that Serta International is leveraging the NEC Sphericall software-based communications solution to connect employees at Serta's headquarters and 21 nationwide manufacturing plans while also significantly lowering the total cost of ownership.

Communications at Serta's multiple locations was expensive and inefficient due to its traditional telephone system and large call volume. In an effort to update the technology for more efficient working conditions, Serta instituted NEC's Sphericall solution. This new technology helped to reduce system-management overhead and facilitate mobility using smartphones.

Serta is now tying together facilities with a wide area network through a BranchHub Media Gateway at each plant location. Sphericall's MeetingHub conferencing solution has helped to improve collaboration at Serta.

UC Adoption Slow to Ramp Up

In a global survey on Unified Communications (UC) conducted with TMCnet subscribers and visitors a year ago, well over half of the participants indicated that their companies had no current plans to deploy UC. Conducted in partnership with research firm IntelliCom Analytics a current follow-up survey found that in North America the 2008 results for all size businesses were essentially identical to those of 2007, with 65% of the decision makers indicating that their companies did not have any plans to utilize UC (compared to 66% in 2007).

That somewhat downbeat finding was counterbalanced by good news for the firms that were headquartered in the other Global Regions - compared to 55% of global businesses indicating "no plans for UC" in 2007, that percentage dropped 10 points to 45% a year later. The other positive shift was seen in the large enterprise segment with over 1,000 employees. Here, the percentage of businesses that have already started UC deployments (or have firm UC plans) rose from 30% in 2007 to 35% in North America, and from 47% to 54% in the other Global Regions.
