New Features Unveiled in M5T's SIP Client Engine v2.0

Samuel Guénette, General Manager of M5T, who has been responsible for the company's operations direction and activities, sat down with Yours Truly to discuss the company's latest SIP-based Unified Communications tool for developers.

RG: In May we talked about M5T's SIP Client Engine (SCE). At that time you mentioned that you will be releasing a new version this month. What are some of the new features and functionalities of the M5T SIP Client Engine?

SG: The M5T SIP Client Engine v2.0 (SCE v2.0) still has all of the features that made it a great developer's tool, it also includes a wealth of new high-level presence and IM capabilities, and it now also implements many SIP features such as GRUU, Caller Preferences and UA Capabilities. Moreover, we have reworked the extension mechanism to better allow applications to build the support for their own SIP extensions over the SCE. This new version opens the path to the integration of more advanced functionalities such as ICE, MIKEY, MSRP and more.

RG: With all of these new features, are you marketing the M5T SCE v2.0 towards a different market segment?

SG: With all of these new functionalities, the M5T

SCE v2.0 is perfect fit for any organization that develops SIP applications and devices that act as a client. This includes standard SIP clients such as IP phones, soft phones and mobile phones. We have also developed the M5T SCE v2.0 to be used by developers building server-based devices that act as a client such as conference servers and presence servers.

Another great advantage of the M5T SCE v2.0 is that it can be reused across different projects, minimizing the learning curve and further decreasing time to market. Moreover, this reuse across projects ensures cross-product interoperability and enhanced stability due to bug fixes transiting from one project to another.

RG: Okay, here is where the rubber meets the road - do you at M5T use the M5T SCE in your applications?

SG: Most definitely, The M5T SCE v2.0 is at the heart of the M5T MC Client; as a development tool it easily integrates SIP-based functionalities into the MC Client. We are working on a number of new telecommunication applications and all will be based on the M5T SCE platform.

RG: So what is the next step for the M5T SCE?

SG: Well, the next principal steps we are working on for the M5T SCE include the integration of the M5T ICE component to facilitate media exchange between SIP clients that are not located on the same network. We will also be working hard on an update to the Instant Messaging & Presence Add-on (UA IMPP) option of the SIP Client Engine to increase the integration of advanced presence functionalities with features such as contact list management, as well as presence authorization management with XCAP and partial PIDF.

We are also working on bringing the SCE 2.0 PacketCable 2.0 ready which will open a variety of new opportunities for us.
