Have you had an unusual amount of spam on Twitter (News - Alert) lately? If so you’re not alone, and Twitter has found a way to combat the problem. On Monday it acquired the web-based security powerhouse, Dasient. Since 2009, Dasient’s focus has been solving security problems involving malware and other types of online abuse.
Its most famous tools are its anti-malware platform capable of scanning URLs and websites for damaging content, and the industry’s first anti-malvertising service protecting ad networks and publishers from harmful content.
Dasient has also been an innovator in the fight against mobile malware and the prevention of personal information being unknowingly leaked through the use of mobile applications.
The acquisition will most likely help Twitter and its “revenue engineering” group to prevent fraud and abuse as it looks to monetize its self-serve ads. The company issued a full statement on its blog Monday confirming its new partnership with Twitter.
Although Internet spam has always been a problem, in recent years it has increased at an alarming rate. In a January, 2011 report done by Sophos, spam was still most prevalent in email, but is becoming more frequent on popular social platforms:
“…In addition to this [email spam] Sophos is continuing to receive an increased number of reports of malicious apps, compromised profiles and unwanted messages spreading across social networks such as Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter.”
Spammers continually change and adapt to the newest security measures; it will be up to the newly acquired Dasient team to help Twitter combat these problems and protect the site and its users from being overrun and taken advantage of.
