The Year Ahead - with Telio's Alan Duric

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

TMCnet recently asked some of the leading lights in the industry for their thoughts about 2011 and what’s in store for the year ahead.

Here’s what Alan Duric (News - Alert), CTO and co-founder at Telio, had to say.

What was your company’s greatest achievement in 2011?

Duric: 2011 was fantastic year for Telio. We are especially proud of successfully launching the Goji communications app (www.gojiapp.com) for Android (News - Alert) OS and iOS, which is used by hundreds of thousands people around the world. It is based on the Teliophone framework, which has been available only to Telio's subscribers in Scandinavia and features very high video and speech quality (HD codec: Opus). Based on the response to our direct-to-consumer app, we have developed a white-label solution, about which you’ll be hearing more soon. Telio has achieved excellent financial results for 2011, while deploying new technologies.

What are your business’s goals for 2012?

Duric: In 2012, our company will have a stronger focus on white-label opportunities in the mobile market. In order to increase the presence in this market segment and further facilitate growth internationally, Telio has established a mobile communications business to support our Goji app.

How would you describe your outlook for business and the economy at large heading into 2012?

Duric: From a global perspective, the world economy in 2012 has a somewhat worrying outlook. However, for the last eight years, Telio has been doing quite well. People need to communicate during the tough times and cost effectiveness is even more important than usual. We are here to save them money while providing high-quality service. So, we are quite excited about the coming year – the technologies and products that we will be launching and the new partnerships that we are working on currently.

If there’s one thing you’d like to see happen related to business in the year ahead, what is that one thing?

Duric: If it is one thing only, then stability of the Eurozone would be the one. If more can be wished for, then: further deployments of LTE (News - Alert), iOS and Android OS being properly open; HTM5 advancement; and finalization of the IETF standardization of the Opus codec.

If 2011 was the year of cloud and/or the year of the tablet, 2012 will be the year of…

Duric: Over-the-top services for voice and video (real-time and non-real-time). They have reached critical mass in 2011 and are poised for phenomenal growth during 2012. Also in 2012, we will see proliferation of business models among OTT players. In addition, I predict that businesses will start using intelligent voice, connecting their call centers to apps to open a whole range of possibilities.
