8x8 Reports Record 3Q Fiscal 2012 Results

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

8x8 (News - Alert) Inc. says it had record financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2012, which ended Dec. 31, 2011.

Revenue for that period was $23.3 million, a 31 percent increase from the same period last year. It marks a 17 percent sequential increase compared to revenue of $19.8 million in the prior quarter.

"We continue to see robust and accelerating growth in new business revenue, while simultaneously reducing churn, and this is contributing to strong overall organic growth across all segments of our business," says 8x8 Chairman & CEO Bryan Martin (News - Alert). "The acquisition of Contactual, which was completed at the end of the September quarter, has rounded out our portfolio of cloud communications services extremely well and now gives us the ability to better serve the needs of larger customers with both on-site and distributed call center operations. I am especially encouraged by the momentum we are seeing on the hosting side of our business and the continued success we are experiencing winning larger businesses and government organizations that are moving toward cloud-based solutions."

The company says its total revenue from business customers, including hosted communications service and cloud data revenue, grew 42 percent year-over-year and represented 93 percent of total revenue. Net income, meanwhile, grew 73 percent vs. the same period last year to $2.6 million or $0.04 per share. And operating income was $2.6 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2012, an 80 percent increase compared to $1.4 million in the same period last year.

As discussed in the August 2011 issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine, 8x8 was founded in 1987 as Integrated Information Technology Inc., arising at the hands of two graphics chip company execs. In 1990, 8x8’s current CEO, Bryan Martin, joined the company’s video compression semiconductor architecture group at CTO. He later assumed the title of CEO.

Virtual Office is the name of the company’s flagship offering, to which it’s added call center and UC functionality, call recording and presence management. Of course, mobility is also a component of the solution, which includes soft clients, web clients, and support for the iPhone (News - Alert) and Android-based smartphones. 8x8 will support other mobile operating systems over time.

In addition to the Contactual deal mentioned above, 8x8 in the past has acquired a managed hosting company called Central Host out of Los Gatos, Calif. The company manages servers in data centers on behalf of customers. When they did deal, Central Host had a $1 million a year run rate; its average customer paid for management of about 10 dedicated servers; and each server only supported a single customer, Martin says.

In February 2011, 8x8 began offering virtualized servers, kind of like Amazon, says Martin. This summer it’ll start providing server resources by the minute or the hour, he says, adding that 8x8 managed services also include subscription-based firewalls, back-up server services, security/VPNs and even hosted Exchange. The company has almost tripled revenues for this business since it bought Central Host.

8x8 on June 20 announced it had acquired Zerigo, a Littleton, Colo.-based company that provides virtual private servers, managed DNS services, and monitoring tools for cloud-based server operations. 8x8 says this deal, for which the terms were not disclosed, “aligns with 8x8's strategic plan to grow its cloud-based offerings through both organic and inorganic activities.”
