Is that a Window, a TV or a Computer? It's All Three!

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

Anyone who works behind a computer all day can tell you the importance of taking a look out the window once in a while to refresh your batteries. Well, if it's up to Samsung (News - Alert), the view might not change all that much.

The South Korean tech giant unveiled a number of innovative products at CES in Las Vegas last week, but the most inventive was clearly its touch-reactive Transparent LCD Smart Window, which is quite literally the combination of a smart TV and your everyday window.

The 46-inch panels are made of transparent LCD displays that look like glass and react like computers. As you can see in the Wired video below, the screen has widgets, apps, email integration and Web surfing functionality. The displays can also be used to transmit video and display digital photos… or they can just act like futuristic pane-less windows.

You can even draw the virtual, yet almost literal blinds on the 1,366 by 768 resolution panels. No need to worry about snooping neighbors though; the panels are transparent only on one side. People on the other side see nothing but their own reflection.

The Transparent LCD Smart Windows will make their first appearance in the coming months as retail displays, information windows, commercial freezer doors and even platform displays at subway stations throughout North America, Europe and Asia, Samsung said on Monday.

Surely, Samsung will market the displays in the consumer space soon after. The company says that it will integrate the products into mobile devices at some point but did not offer a target date.

"Transparent panels, an exciting application of next-generation display technology, have unlimited potential to change our viewing habits over the next several years. As a strong supporter of the transparent display market, Samsung plans to develop this technology into a new growth engine for our LCD business," Younghwan Park, senior vice president of LCD marketing at Samsung Electronics, noted in a statement.

These types of technologies were teased in a viral video made by Corning (News - Alert) called "A Day Made of Glass" just last year. The five-minute film takes viewers through a day in the life of an average (and rather affluent) American family in the not-too-distant future – a future dominated by touch-sensitive displays just like the ones introduced by Samsung. It's pretty cool; check it out if you haven't yet.
